David Spoon:As we work together to know the letter better into the narrative of the Book of Colossians, we travel to understand what things the Lord requires of us as we learn to apply God's timeless truths in our lives.
David Spoon:First, back into Colossians, chapter 2.
David Spoon:Picking it up right at verse 13, although we may visit verse 12 for a second.
David Spoon:Remember that Christology, the study of Christ, is the key to the letter.
David Spoon:Jesus is the focus.
David Spoon:So in verse 13, the apostle writes, you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature.
David Spoon:It's simple.
David Spoon:Before Christ, we were dead, which is why we need to be born again.
David Spoon:It's not just a saying, it's a spiritual truth that is inescapable.
David Spoon:When people mock Christians about being born again, they fail to understand that they are mocking God.
David Spoon:Next, God has made us alive with Christ.
David Spoon:We share in Jesus resurrection power by positionally and as the Lord works in our lives, practically, our position with God is that we've been born again through Jesus Christ.
David Spoon:From his ascension, he pours out the Holy Spirit in us and in Jesus.
David Spoon:He forgave us our trespasses.
David Spoon:But there is a key phase in this that we cannot afford to miss.
David Spoon:He forgave us all our trespasses, not just some.
David Spoon:And finally, by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, he canceled our debt which was ascribed to us and stood against us and us deserving that punishment.
David Spoon:Without a doubt, he nailed it to the cross.
David Spoon:When people think of the word debt, we often think of money.
David Spoon:But keep in mind that we owe God a moral debt.
David Spoon:This moral debt highlights that we are bankrupt when it comes to righteousness.
David Spoon:Through Jesus Christ, however, we receive a new inheritance.

David Spoon:Why would you text us or even why would you call us?
David Spoon:And that's simple.
David Spoon:It could be for a praise report.
David Spoon:And we love those.
David Spoon:And praise reports are cool.
David Spoon:It doesn't have to be spoken wisely.
David Spoon:It just has to be shared.
David Spoon:You just let the Lord take care of what happens to it.
David Spoon:But it blesses others.
David Spoon:It blesses yourself, and it blesses and honors God.

David Spoon:We can do prayer requests because we believe prayer works.

David Spoon:And anytime you come across somebody, they go, it doesn't work.
David Spoon:You should just say, well, not for you.

David Spoon:Of course it doesn't work.
David Spoon:But for those that believe, all things are possible to him that believes.
David Spoon:See, see, by the way, that's always connected to God, not independently.

David Spoon:All right, then additionally, it could be for something you want to share, something you came across, something important, something that's on your heart, whatever those things are.

Charles Edwards:I got a praise.
Charles Edwards:I got a praise report that I had, you know, had battles in my mind.
Charles Edwards:I went ahead and went through Don Diggerman ministry and.
Charles Edwards:And was the.
Charles Edwards:Went through deliverance.
Charles Edwards:And in the meantime, for being restored of healing, I've had these varice veins and something that was.
Charles Edwards:They were always biopsying on my stomach.
Charles Edwards:They go down once a year, and I've had it for several years.
Charles Edwards:And anyways, in December, they went down my throat and he said, I can't find nothing.
David Spoon:Wow.
Charles Edwards:Take medicine or anything for it.
Charles Edwards:So I praise God for that.
David Spoon:First of all, that is just a phenomenal, phenomenal testimony.
David Spoon:And I just, I gotta say, it's like when you first heard that, and this is just being honest, just being brothers and so on and so forth.
David Spoon:When you first heard that, were you like, going, are you sure?
David Spoon:You know.
Charles Edwards:I was shocked because those things don't go away.
David Spoon:Wow.
David Spoon:Wowzer.
David Spoon:Praise the Lord.
David Spoon:How gracious is God?
David Spoon:That is so cool.
David Spoon:That is an awesome, awesome thing that is taking place.
David Spoon:Just the power of God operating in life.
David Spoon:And that's for those that are listening.
David Spoon:You should believe God can do anything.
David Spoon:There's nothing he can't do, folks.
David Spoon:All things are possible to him that believes.
David Spoon:I mean, God can do anything.
David Spoon:Remember, Jesus is at the garden.

David Spoon:All things are possible for you.
David Spoon:It's like, yep, there it is.

Charles Edwards:My stepmother, Sherry Edwards, she's been sick in the hospital.
Charles Edwards:And she has the varicy veins and.
Charles Edwards:And cirrhosis.
Charles Edwards:And she got dehydrated in her.
Charles Edwards:And her kidneys were getting.
Charles Edwards:You know.
Charles Edwards:But they said they'll come back up and stuff.
Charles Edwards:I just.
Charles Edwards:She.
Charles Edwards:She's 80 and my dad's 87, in great health.
Charles Edwards:But I just would like.
Charles Edwards:You sure.

David Spoon:Let's take your faith, my faith.

David Spoon:So we're asking you to reach into her body and bring healing power to Sherry.

David Spoon:And, Lord, it's not what we're against.
David Spoon:The doctors.
David Spoon:We love doctors, Lord.
David Spoon:Bless them, guide them, direct them, but move it past them into your realm of healing.
David Spoon:Bring that healing upon her and let her just be blessed by it.
David Spoon:And let the family be encouraged by it.
David Spoon:Let Charles just be lifted up by it and let us hear a testimony regarding it.
David Spoon:Lord, we just thank you for it.
David Spoon:We just entrust it into your hands.

David Spoon:D stands for draw closer to the Lord.

David Spoon:Everything, everything that flows in scripture.
David Spoon:I'm just going to tell you right now, if you have any kind of ministry, if you have any kind of Christian walk, everything flows from your relationship.
David Spoon:When Jesus was sitting there and remember the disciples, they said, well, we're going to get you food.
David Spoon:Hey, you need to eat food.
David Spoon:And Jesus says, I have food.
David Spoon:You don't know what it is.
David Spoon:You don't know its core.
David Spoon:Jesus was talking about his communion and his obedience and his response to the Father.
David Spoon:Everything flows out of that relationship that you have with God.
David Spoon:All ministry, all right?
David Spoon:Living, all righteous, all character.
David Spoon:All of that flows from that connection.
David Spoon:It's like tapping.
David Spoon:I just love the way that this has been said in the past.
David Spoon:It's like tapping into the real divine.
David Spoon:It's like when you connect with God, it's the real deal.
David Spoon:And that sets everything in motion.
David Spoon:Remember, I'll just do this because I can't resist.
David Spoon:I just can't.
David Spoon:Jesus gets baptized.
David Spoon:The Father speaks.
David Spoon:This is my son, in whom I am well pleased.
David Spoon:All he did was get baptized.
David Spoon:But what did he do the prior 30 years?
David Spoon:Hanging out with dad.
David Spoon:Get it?
David Spoon:Just think about that, D.
David Spoon:Draw closer to the Lord daily and never be ashamed of Jesus or his words.
David Spoon:I don't care what you say, don't do it.
David Spoon:God created the universe.
David Spoon:The dude can write a book.
David Spoon:Maybe you don't understand all of it.
David Spoon:I don't understand all of it.
David Spoon:I get some of it.
David Spoon:But there is a great depth to God's word.
David Spoon:I'm never ashamed of it.
David Spoon:I love it.
David Spoon:I eat it because it is better than bread.
David Spoon:Never be ashamed of Jesus or his words.
David Spoon:D N and then the A.
David Spoon:Always be ready to serve.
David Spoon:To serve.
David Spoon:You know, one of the people that's called us in the past, I think is Alan, and he's a.
David Spoon:You know, he does missionary work.
David Spoon:And then a lot of our people are connected to different types of work when they're ministering to people who are really hurting.
David Spoon:And they're chaplains and so on and so forth.
David Spoon:You know what?
David Spoon:As a chaplain, you never know at what moment you will be called upon.
David Spoon:It's no different for a chaplain than it is for you.
David Spoon:You never know when the Lord's going to call upon you.
David Spoon:Be ready.
David Spoon:You got to be ready to go for whatever it is.
David Spoon:D Draw closer to the Lord daily and never be ashamed of Jesus or his words.
David Spoon:A Always be ready to serve.
David Spoon:We do have somebody on the line.

David Spoon:If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes are the words from Jesus in the ninth chapter of Ezra, Malachi, Mark, or Ephesians.
Ken:Well, you know, I think it was just Mark that I think the rest of them were.
Ken:I don't think it was Paul and others, Ezra, them.
Ken:Other guys.
David Spoon:But Mark is the correct answer for that.
David Spoon:That's just.
David Spoon:That's it.
David Spoon:It's amazing because in that portion, he goes, if you can believe.
David Spoon:So then the onus comes back on us.
David Spoon:It's like, yeah, you gotta participate in this.
David Spoon:If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.
David Spoon:It's like, okay, we gotta get on it, right?
Ken:Yep.
David Spoon:Excellent.
Ken:So I've got something to Share, absolutely.
Ken:And a prayer after the share because you have to watch what you ask for.
Ken:And so it was a day.
Ken:So we, you know, we have.
Ken:We collect mothers, me and my wife, and so we've got to take care of mine.
Ken:And then her mom has been, you know, distance away, so it's like halfway between my.
Ken:I've been.
Ken:We've been taking care of her mom and my mom.
Ken:She's been in a care home.
Ken:And then the people, you know, she's been the hospital.
Ken:So the hospital.
Ken:Anyway, she's ended up.
Ken:Everybody wants to put her down, right?
Ken:We don't.
Ken:We don't do that.
Ken:And so we were.
Ken:This was last September and there was one of those.
Ken:A lot of pressure and we're there and she's in the hospital and.
Ken:Excuse me.
Ken:And.
Ken:And so I'm like talking like, well, you know, you guys could do whatever you want.
Ken:I have to ask her because I know that I've seen her prayers answered in front of my face all the time.
Ken:And so she, I.
Ken:We're driving home and I'm like, well, what did you pray for?
Ken:And she says, well, you know, I prayed that, you know, my mother is well enough that we take her out of this hospital, that I'm going to take care of her myself.
Ken:And I'm like, oh, great, because that's a lot of work.
Ken:That.
Ken:That was the path.
Ken:So, I mean, where's the 10 o'clock at night?
Ken:We're out here in Sherman.
Ken:So we got a little.
Ken:I gotta have.
Ken:I went to have.
Ken:I got to go 30 miles out of my way to get my trailer.
Ken:And she's like, what are you doing?
Ken:I said, I'm getting the trailer.
Ken:We got to make room for your mother.
Ken:And so it all turned out just like we prayed.
Ken:And I knew that it would.
Ken:I've seen these things, so I'm like, there's no question.
Ken:Anyway, so when you answer the little preview, you know, when you count on these things and I do, and they fall worth like it is.
Ken:But, you know, you got to be able to do what you ask for.
Ken:And we're old, we got, you know, I got to.
Ken:And so once.
Ken:And so, you know, and then caregivers and all the other things and we don't, you know, hiding our faith is something that doesn't even happen.
Ken:And so, you know, answer the.
Ken:Anyway, so all the bad stuff, you know, how he is.
Ken:And so, you know, we're really kind of like in an Ephesians 6:13 mode here.
Ken:And so it's All.
Ken:Everything just.
Ken:You know, it does when you got to start getting prayers answered.
Ken:And other people know because my caregiver thinks it's been like.

Ken:And then you make sure that you load your cannons on the deck, because with the wind comes.
Ken:Come with that wind comes the prince of the air.

Ken:Oh, all that stuff.
Ken:It's you, your people, and all kinds of stuff going around it.
Ken:So there's a lot of the distraction distortion, you know, the whole pile of Ds that come in when they.
Ken:When they got.
Ken:When you're figured out.
Ken:So.
Ken:Yeah, every time when you're doing, you know, just like you were saying before, when they start, you know, when you.
Ken:You lift your head up, you know, high enough, it's.
Ken:They're coming after you when they.
Ken:When they figure out what you're doing.
Ken:And we've.

Ken:We've punched a big hole in his game for sure.

Ken:Because, you know, my poor wife, I cannot even keep up with her, you know, I mean, she's like, killing me.
Ken:And I pray for her all the time, and, you know, I see the Lord with her all the time.
Ken:That's what got me started.
Ken:I'm like, what is that?
Ken:You know, you see that?
Ken:And you said that.
Ken:I'm like, going, what?
Ken:It's just like in the book, you know, you live that way and they'll see it.
Ken:I'm like, I wanted that.
Ken:And then you don't.
Ken:You don't say you want that.
Ken:And God hear you because it's coming.
David Spoon:Yeah.
David Spoon:So that's cool.
Ken:So I believe Absolutely.
Ken:Every word.
Ken:You know, I believe.

Ken:I'm not trying to prove if it.
Ken:It's like how and why.
Ken:And that's how I run at it.

Ken:So prayers for my wife and my two mothers and all the caregiver and my caregiver Ty, because they all strong, making me look weak.
Ken:And so it's been a challenge to my manhood watching women who's like going feedings, you know, because I mean, it doesn't stop, you know, I mean, she's on a feeding tube.
Ken:So we're so, we're, you know, we're changing and doing stuff.
Ken:It's between two, you know, I go to bed at three o'clock every morning whether I'm sleepy or not.
David Spoon:Well, let me pray over everybody.
David Spoon:I wanted to just a prayer of blessing, a prayer of protection, strength, wisdom and continued faith and growth in faith.
David Spoon:Let's do it.
David Spoon:Let's bring it before the Lord.
David Spoon:Father, we come before youe right now.
David Spoon:How phenomenal.
David Spoon:Well, first of all, how phenomenal are you?
David Spoon:You're just phenomenal to each and every one of us.
David Spoon:Your kindness is so passed, it's so past us, Lord, because you are continually kind, even when we're really being dumb.
David Spoon:And your mercies are just, they're just never ending.
David Spoon:And your answers are phenomenal and your graciousness is just lights out.
David Spoon:And I'm just praying for this whole family and what I'm praying for.
David Spoon:Kind of a weird prayer, Lord.
David Spoon:And I know you know where I'm coming from on this.
David Spoon:I.
David Spoon:I pray that this would have that echo effect that drop the rock in the water and have the ripples come out and have people be touched by what they hear.
David Spoon:I'm praying for energy for everybody involved.
David Spoon:Your word makes it clear.
David Spoon:In Colossians 1:29, Paul says, I labor with the energy that God gives me.
David Spoon:We want that energy for this family so that they can keep going, keep doing things that are advancing your kingdom, that are making declaration of your goodness, and that they're putting up the sales things ahead of time because they absolutely believe that you answer their petitions and shine that light to others around them so that the kingdom of God can be declared.
David Spoon:Nobody can do this, but you do this very thing.
David Spoon:Bless these people.
David Spoon:What a phenomenal testimony from our brother.

David Spoon:I just ask you just to bless him personally so he can know what a blessing he just was.

David Spoon:I want you to listen to this and then I want you to think about today, all the stuff that's going on.

David Spoon:I want you just to consider the landscaping that we're all living in right now, the landscape of society.
David Spoon:It says this.
David Spoon:But you must remember, beloved, that the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, they said to you in the last times.
David Spoon:There will be scoffers following their own ungodly passions.
David Spoon:It is these who cause divisions.
David Spoon:Worldly people devoid of the Holy Spirit.
David Spoon:Now listen to that.
David Spoon:This is a prophecy that is being brought up by Jude, who is a brother to Jesus, won't even identify himself that way.
David Spoon:Brother to James, who was in charge of the church after the James of Peter.
David Spoon:James John died in Acts 12.
David Spoon:In Acts 15, the other James kind of ascends to the position of power, so to speak.
David Spoon:And he's not in charge of everybody.
David Spoon:He's just kind of leading the show.
David Spoon:And like Peter did in the early church.
David Spoon:And this is Jude, his brother and brother of Jesus.
David Spoon:And he's telling you got to remember what the apostles said.
David Spoon:The apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, he's so humble when he writes that.

David Spoon:And just in case you're wondering how deep we can go in that theologically, I'll just drop this on you because I'm being a nice guy today.
David Spoon:Basically, Jesus gave the summation of the law.
David Spoon:What was that summation?
David Spoon:Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind.
David Spoon:Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
David Spoon:However, in John 13, Jesus said a new commandment I give you.
David Spoon:Love one another as I have loved you.
David Spoon:So what's important for us to understand is how Jesus loved you and I far exceeds how we love ourselves.
David Spoon:And that's the love he wants us to have for our brothers and sisters, specifically for the family of God.
David Spoon:That's why that's important.
David Spoon:It's like, oh, yeah, that's kind of like, ooh.
David Spoon:That kind of puts it on a whole nother plane.
David Spoon:It does.
David Spoon:And it's appropriate.
David Spoon:Okay.
David Spoon:Now, one thing I have to do is send you guys to the website.

David Spoon:But I wanna just point out I always appreciate it when people give and the Lord.

David Spoon:We're gonna have to get into the Colossians text.
David Spoon:I'm gonna jump in there real fast.
David Spoon:There's this one part that I just can't.
David Spoon:I just can't miss this because I need this.
David Spoon:When I say that, it's like I'm not doing this, like in brilliance.
David Spoon:I mean, I need this.
David Spoon:This is what I need.
David Spoon:So we're in Colossians, we're in chapter two.
David Spoon:And we remember we came off of last week in Christ, all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in bodily form.
David Spoon:And you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every rule and authority.
David Spoon:So never think that Jesus is not in charge.
David Spoon:And remember Colossians all about Christ centered Christology.
David Spoon:It's all about the study of Christ.
David Spoon:Here's what it says in the next verse.
David Spoon:In Him, in him you were also circumcised in the putting off of your sinful nature with the circumcision with Christ.
David Spoon:I mentioned it before, but I didn't get to talk about it.
David Spoon:Here's the thing you need to understand about circumcision.
David Spoon:I'm going to make it super easy before people kind of lose their minds on this, okay?
David Spoon:When the apostle goes on to say that circumcision is putting off the old sinful nature with a circumcision that took place by Jesus, remember that circumcision is the cutting off of too much flesh back in the time of Abraham.
David Spoon:Well, so it is now.
David Spoon:What the Lord is trying to teach you and I is that in Jesus, cut off the extra flesh.
David Spoon:And don't tell me you don't have that war back and forth.
David Spoon:Every epistle, every letter talks about this element where we go between the old man and the new man.
David Spoon:Yes, the old man's crucified positionally, but not practically.
David Spoon:Which is why when you visit the old neighborhood, it's as bad as it always was.
David Spoon:That's the whole point.
David Spoon:You ever notice that?
David Spoon:It's like, how did I fall right back into that?
David Spoon:All the way over what's going on?
David Spoon:And it's in Christ that circumcision takes place.
David Spoon:The cutting off of the flesh in Jesus, you reduce the power of the flesh that you walk in and you can reduce it to nada.
David Spoon:But you have to understand that it is in Christ that happens.
David Spoon:And that's why it says, in Christ you are a new creation.
David Spoon:Just Dr.
David Spoon:Robert Jeffress talking about being a new creation in Christ this last Sunday.
David Spoon:The whole point of that is to understand in Jesus it's over.
David Spoon:But sometimes some of us wake up on the wrong side of the bed and then forget we are in Jesus.
David Spoon:Or we don't forget it, we just don't bother to use it.
David Spoon:I love, love this Saying, I'll give credit to it.
David Spoon:In Phoenix, Arizona, when it came in, a conversation between a couple people.
David Spoon:We have the mind of Christ.
David Spoon:The Bible says, that's not the problem.
David Spoon:The problem is we don't always use it.
David Spoon:That's the problem.
David Spoon:See, we have the mind of Christ, but we need to use it.
David Spoon:And you're thinking, wow, okay, so then where is the mind of Christ?
David Spoon:The bi B L E.
David Spoon:That's the book for me.
David Spoon:I stand by faith on the Word of God.
David Spoon:It's the B I, B L E.
David Spoon:And that's why Jesus is called the Word of God.

David Spoon:And so it's like, yeah, wait a minute.
David Spoon:I don't have to be on the downside of things.
David Spoon:It doesn't mean that you're always smiling, but that doesn't mean you have to live in defeat.

David Spoon:In him, you were also circumcised in the putting off of your sinful nature with the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands.
David Spoon:In other words, this isn't something that people do.
David Spoon:This is something that God does.
David Spoon:Verse 12.
David Spoon:Having been buried with him in baptism, you were raised with him through your faith.
David Spoon:Faith in the power of God, who raises him from the dead.
David Spoon:So there's two points here, and we want to talk about it.
David Spoon:Number one is when you are baptized, it is an outward proclamation of the inward work.
David Spoon:It is you connecting to God's work and saying, I proclaim I am a Christian in baptism.
David Spoon:What's cool about baptism is there's some parts about it that are totally like.
David Spoon:They get isolated in scripture.
David Spoon:This is one of those places.
David Spoon:And you're thinking, what do you mean by that?
David Spoon:This is what it says.
David Spoon:What it says is that in baptism we what we were buried with him.
David Spoon:In this portion of scripture, it doesn't say we're raised with him in baptism.
David Spoon:It just simply says we're buried with him.
David Spoon:So I want you to catch that.
David Spoon:That's an important point.
David Spoon:It's also important to catch this point.
David Spoon:Listen to this.
David Spoon:This point right here.
David Spoon:Super important.
David Spoon:He says, you are buried with him in baptism.
David Spoon:You were raised with him through your faith in the power of God.
David Spoon:So scripture looks at all these things and looks at them at different points.
David Spoon:In other words, people think, well, everything looks the exact same.
David Spoon:That's so silly.
David Spoon:You already understand, or at least if you listen to this show.
David Spoon:Look, part of this is God choosing.
David Spoon:Part of this is you and your free will.
David Spoon:They're like two parts of a coin.
David Spoon:You're still responsible for your decisions, but God also participates in the choosing.
David Spoon:You don't know what God's choosing cause he doesn't tell.
David Spoon:You still have to make decisions for yourself.
David Spoon:But it's not like God doesn't choose and you still have to choose.
David Spoon:That's like looking at the same element, but from two different points of view.
David Spoon:Let's use the really clear illustration.
David Spoon:Four people go up to an elephant.
David Spoon:North, south, east and west.
David Spoon:Right?
David Spoon:The west and the east are going to have exceedingly different points of view.
David Spoon:The north and the south are going to be very similar to north and south, but different than east and west.
David Spoon:It's still the same elephant.
David Spoon:Nobody has to fear.
David Spoon:That's just obvious.
David Spoon:Like, oh yeah, I get that.
David Spoon:Right.
David Spoon:So what we need to understand in this is that there is something that happens in baptism that is so cool.
David Spoon:When you get baptized, you give greater power and testimony, authority and functionality in the fact that the old you has died.
David Spoon:You give it that due that you're dead.
David Spoon:And it doesn't have the power over you.
David Spoon:Though you still seem to visit every so often.
David Spoon:It doesn't own you.
David Spoon:It's trespassing.
David Spoon:The old you in the outside of that.
David Spoon:It says through your faith in the power of God, you were raised with him.
David Spoon:Faith brings us up.
David Spoon:It raises you up.
David Spoon:Without faith, it's impossible to please God.
David Spoon:I cannot communicate to this audience, to myself or to anybody how important faith is since it's the vehicle that God has chosen for us to please him and engage within him.
David Spoon:When you are down, faith brings you up to life.
David Spoon:Are you down?
David Spoon:Why so downcast, O my soul?
David Spoon:Put your hope in God.
David Spoon:Get that faith a moving.
David Spoon:Because God can do anything and will do many things if we will do more.
David Spoon:Believing through faith in the power of God who raised him from the dead you were raised.
David Spoon:That faith pulls you up.
David Spoon:Use that faith pull up.
David Spoon:Do you understand?
David Spoon:Pull up.
David Spoon:Okay.
