Section 1

Samuel’s remarkable faithfulness did not guarantee that his children would follow the same path. As he grew older, his sons Joel and Abijah served as judges but became greedy, accepted bribes, and perverted justice. Dr. Dave points out the painful similarity to Samuel’s own upbringing under Eli, whose sons had also corrupted their spiritual responsibilities. Samuel had been an extraordinary servant of God, yet something went terribly wrong with his sons. The passage provides a sobering reminder that even strong spiritual leaders can experience heartbreaking problems within their families, and children ultimately must make their own decisions about whether they will faithfully follow the Lord.

Israel recognized the corruption surrounding Samuel’s sons but responded by demanding a king so they could become like the nations around them. Dr. Dave identifies the deeper danger in their request: rather than seeking more of God, they looked toward the world for their solution. The same temptation confronts churches when they modify biblical truth in an effort to gain acceptance, popularity, or greater numbers. Scripture does not call the church to imitate culture but to remain the pillar and foundation of truth. The message of repentance cannot be exchanged for compromise simply because worldly approaches appear more attractive or successful.

Section 3

Troubled by Israel’s demand, Samuel did something the nation itself had failed to do—he went directly to the Lord for guidance. The people had legitimate concerns, but their mistake was seeking a human solution before seeking God. Dr. Dave emphasizes that wise counselors certainly have value, yet no human counsel should replace going first to the ultimate source of wisdom. God should never become the emergency option believers approach after everything else has failed. He is the source of life, wisdom, strength, and direction. Whatever the circumstance, the proper order remains clear: seek God first, because the answer to spiritual failure is never more of the world—it is more of God.
