Following the full counsel of God sometimes means remaining with a subject longer than people might prefer, and First Corinthians 7 continues Paul's teaching concerning marriage and singleness. Dr. Dave emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between direct commands from the Lord and Paul's Spirit-inspired counsel, distinctions the passage itself clearly identifies. Rather than becoming trapped in rigid technicalities, believers should understand the principles being communicated. Paul's purpose is practical: helping Christians navigate relationships and responsibilities wisely while maintaining an unwavering devotion to God above everything else.

Singleness can provide a remarkable opportunity for someone to devote greater attention, time, and energy directly to the Lord. Paul explains that an unmarried person can concentrate more fully on pleasing God without carrying the additional responsibilities that naturally accompany marriage. Dr. Dave points out that Jesus described this capacity as a gift, and those who possess it should never be considered unusual or incomplete. God created and honors marriage, but He also honors those who are genuinely equipped to serve Him faithfully without a spouse.

Section 3

Marriage brings additional responsibilities because loving a spouse requires genuine investments of time, attention, sacrifice, and care. Dr. Dave stresses that marriage is not simply about a wife pleasing her husband; a husband must also seek the well-being of his wife, loving her as Christ loved the church. Sometimes that means resisting the urge to immediately solve a problem and simply listening when she needs to share what she is experiencing. God must always remain first, but within marriage the spouse holds the highest earthly priority, making sacrificial care an essential part of faithfully honoring the Lord.
