12-30-24 part 1: Love Your Spouse First: A Biblical Perspective on Family
This podcast episode features Dr. David Spoon as he delves into the importance of older women teaching younger women in the faith, emphasizing that these lessons should focus on love for their husbands and children. Dr. Spoon discusses the scriptural basis for this teaching, highlighting the significance of maintaining unity in marriage to effectively raise children. He challenges societal views that elevate children above the marital relationship, asserting that a strong partnership between parents is essential for a healthy family dynamic. Throughout the episode, he encourages listeners to embrace their roles in nurturing faith within their families and communities. Listeners will also find humor and engaging commentary as Dr. Spoon navigates through biblical teachings and contemporary issues, making the discussion both informative and entertaining.
A key theme of the episode revolves around the teachings from the book of Titus, specifically focusing on the roles and responsibilities of older women in the church. Dr. Spoon delves into the scriptural injunctions that call for older women to be examples of reverent behavior, emphasizing the significance of mentorship in guiding younger generations. He articulates the idea that older women are not only to refrain from slander and excessive drinking but are also called to teach what is good and encourage younger women in their roles as wives and mothers. This teaching is contextualized within a broader discussion on family dynamics, where Dr. Spoon argues that the love between spouses should precede love for children, advocating for unity and collaboration in parenting. He challenges societal norms that prioritize children over marital relationships, stressing that a strong foundation in marriage benefits the entire family.

Speaker B:Hello, everybody.
Speaker B:I've got sunshine on a cloudy day when it's cold outside I've got my.
David:Here's what's coming up on today's experience.
David:It's Dr.
David:Dave's devotional Diamonds of the Day, also known as DDDDDDDS, where my daily devotions become some of our spiritual reflections.
David:Sound effects play throughout the show which have nothing to do with life, but as you know, we spare no expense down and loading them free from the Internet.
David:The review of the goofy news which proves Jesus is coming back sooner than you think.
David:If you're a Bible believing border gang Christian, you're hoping, yes.
David:Also, life lessons for our faith that we could actually use, probably won't.
David:If we sit on our blessed assurance humor that will force you to think, why does this guy have a radio show?
David:And the real reason is, is cause I'm so bad at all the other things that I do.
David:That's why.
Speaker D:Also, Bible trivia for fake and yet somehow real cool.
David:Pract your phone calls and more.
David:Welcome to the davidspoon Experience, local, national and heavenly talk.
David:My name is David, Dr.
David:David Spoon.
David:I'll be your host for the next 5,400,000 milliseconds.
David:Get ready for one of the more bizarre experiences on live radio.
David:Here is the key to the show.
David:We don't know what we're doing.
David:We have no idea what's gonna happen and we don't care.
David:But for the next few minutes, I want to talk faith with you.
David:So here we go.
David:We're asking questions about living life as a Christian.
David:That thingy right there.
David:Here on this show, the prayer warriors are not sitting behind the stage with a bunch of telephones.
David:The prayer warriors are the people that are listening.
David:Your brothers and sisters in Christ.
David:They are the prayer warriors.
David:And so we are asking you that your brothers and sisters may love you and join you in what you go through.
David:What can our prayer warriors pray for you about?
David:And I know many are thinking, well, does prayer work?
Speaker D:Well, only if you do it.
David:That's when it works.
Speaker D:Get it?
David:Okay, so we're asking you, what can our prayer warriors, our people, our audience pray for you about?
David:If you have one person praying about something, that's good.
David:If you have two people, that's better.
David:If you have 3,000 people, that's even better.
David:Better, right?
David:So if you have something along those lines and you want it doesn't have to be something bad.
David:It could be something good.
David:But what can our prayer warriors pray for you about?
David:If you have a response to that.
Speaker D:An opinion, a comment, a thought or.
David:A question, please don't let it die of loneliness.
David:We consider that to be very sad.
David:All you gotta do is reach out.
Speaker D:And give us a call.
David: -: David: -: David: -: Speaker D:Wowzer.
David:Talking to Jam and Jacob is like heading into the week with great faith and expectation.
David:Hello.
Speaker E:Thank you, David.
Speaker E:Happy Monday.
Speaker E:Only two more days using that intro.
David:That's right.
David:You gotta use a different intro.
David:You already got it.
Speaker E:Yes, I have one in mind.
Speaker E:I would actually be playing it on the 2nd because station will be closed on the 1st.
David:But wow, very, very cool for you.
David:Very happy for you.
David:I want to say that it is.
Speaker D:Already Jam and Jacob holding the fort.
David:Down as the entire fort went powerless around 10 this morning.
David:And he brought it back.
David:It's not quite the resurrection, but he brought it back and did a phenomenal job keeping everything running.
David:So big golf clap for you right here.
Speaker E:Thank you.
Speaker E:You know, we talked about it before the show, but it's happened before with the power going out when Jennifer is here.
Speaker E:But it, it feels like it only happens when I'm the only one here.
Speaker E:And it's happened so much now that I've kind of got the step by step process down to get everything back on air and get everything, you know, back to normal.
Speaker E:So, yeah, it happened again this morning, but luckily it came back on real quick and I was able to get everything back to running.
David:Well, here's what we're going to say.
David:We're going to say instead of luck, we're going to say it was by grace that you were able to do that.
David:How about that?
David:Excellent though, that you've got it all running.
David:Glad to have you on board.
David:We'll be doing Jake's take and the other 60 minutes.
David:We won't be doing a long one today because it won't really matter until tonight.
David:I'm just letting everybody know.
David:Don't forget, of course, about our modified schedule.
David:We'll get into that.
David:But listen, if you want to call the show, it really won't cost you any money.
David:No, it won't.
David:It doesn't cost any money to call the show.
David:I'm just letting you know.
David:Okay, there you go.
David:Here's the deal.
David:You can call the show.
Speaker D:You can also, by the way, besides.
David:Calling, you can text us.
David: -: David: -: David:Now that is the ministry line.
David:But during the show from 1:30 to 3 Texas time.
David:I call it Texas time.
David:That only uses the texting application.
David:So don't try and call that number.
David: -: David:You can also send an email during the show.
David:David, because that's my name.
David:That's what they named me at birth.
David:No, it wasn't after a king, but.
Speaker D:I have used that line before.
David:David at a with a circle.
David:He must increase from John 3:30.
David:Recognizing that the Ministry of Jesus must increase.
David:His ministry must decrease.
David:That's where it comes from.
David:John 3:30 and dot org because we're a non profit corporation.
David:So it's dot davidemustincrease.org so you can.
Speaker D:Call, you can text, you can email.
David:Why would you do that?
David:Maybe you've got a praise report, something that happened between the last time we were on the air on Friday and today, or something that happened in this last month, or something that happened in this last quarter.
David:Maybe something that happened in this last year and you haven't had the chance to say thank you publicly to the Lord.
David:When you share a praise report, it strengthens it in your own life, it blesses other people who hear it and it brings glory to God.
David:And that, my friends, is one of the reasons you exist, to glorify the Lord.
David:So you have that opportunity for prayer.
David:Hallelujah.
David:We pray.
David:Our audience prays.
David:We are prayers.
David:Are we crazy?
David:We're Baptistal.
David:Get over it.
David:We're part Baptist, part, part Pentecostal and everything in between.
David:And the reason is because this we have one heavenly Father.
David:Jesus said, when you pray, say our Father.
David:We are blood relatives.
Speaker D:It is through the blood of Jesus Christ.
David:Check out Ephesians, chapter 1, verse 7.
David:And we drink of one Holy Spirit.
David:And the scripture teaches us in Ephesians to keep the unity.
Speaker D:We've got it.
David:If you've got some differences, awesome.
David:Celebrate them.
David:But brothers and sisters together, we need.
Speaker D:To hang out together.
David:And what did Jesus say?
David:People go, well, you know, just love your neighbors, love yourself and love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, mind.
David:Love your neighbor as you love Yourself.
David: Jesus said in John: David:Love one another as I have loved you.
David:That's better than as we love ourselves, isn't it?
Speaker D:Wow.
David:Another step up.
David:So praying together, that's all a part of that.
David:Maybe you got something you want to share.
David:Maybe something happened.
David:Maybe you got a scripture.
Speaker D:Something's on your heart and mind.
Speaker D:We love it.
David:You are welcome to share that with us.
David:I will remind you a couple of things because we are getting into a very, very tough little teaching.
David:We are in Titus chapter 2.
David:Before we get there, we do have a modified schedule this week.
David:On Wednesday, there will be nobody in the studio except the Lord.
David:We will be doing a phenomenal replay.
David:So we're live today, tomorrow, then Thursday and Friday, okay?
David:So just be aware of that.
David:So we will be doing a replay.
David:That's our modified schedule.
David:Also, if you're planning on giving and you want to use it for your purposes of deduction, you need to talk to an accountant.
Speaker D:Because I am not your accountant, nor.
David:An attorney or anything else.
David:But the truth of the matter is, if you're going to give and get a tax deductible receipt from this ministry, you got two days to do it.
David:And yes, I'm going to do that because everybody else does it.
David:I'm just going to say it right there and leave it right there.
David:All right, There it is.
David:We'll do, like I said, Jake's take later on.
David:We'll do some trivia later on.
David:In the meantime, this is where we want to get into.
David:We are in Titus.
David:We are in Chapter two.
David:And I don't think it's controversial, but some people do.
David:And we'll pick it right back up.
David:Titus 2, 3.
David:It says this in the same way.
David:Older women are to be reverent in behavior.
David:Remember, he just talked about men being older men being reverent in behavior.
David:Now he's saying the same thing.
David:Older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderous, not slaves to excessive drinking.
David:They are to teach what is good.
Speaker D:So that they may encourage the younger.
David:Woman to love their husbands, to love their children, to be self controlled, pure workers at home, kind and in submission to their husbands, so the word of.
Speaker D:God will not be slandered.
David:For those people that don't like what God has to say, take it up with God.
David:Okay, you don't like it, I got you there.
David:Take it up with the Lord.
David:You don't like how he does it, tell him.
David:Let me know how that goes.
Speaker D:Hopefully, he won't answer you out of.
David:A whirlwind, because you'll never speak again.
David:So let's go back to this Titus 2, picking it up at verse 3, where Paul's giving his young protege instructions on how to deal with different groups of people in the social ladder of life.
David:And it's addressing women and how Titus as a minister, people in general should also should engage with older women.
David:And those women should be magnifying and manifesting godly character.
David:Now, I'll make this statement, and you can take offense to it, or you can take a gate to it, or you can take a torch to it doesn't matter.
David:I'm still going to make the statement.
Speaker D:Older women are to be examples now.
David:To be reverent in behavior, which means respectful, obnoxious older women.
David:All you have to do is think of a TV show like the View to recognize what is not respectful.
David:There is nothing respectful about those people.
David:And so the Scripture goes on to.
Speaker D:Declare that older women need not to be slanderous, nor, by the way, slaves of excessive drinking.
David:This is now a second time where Paul connects the words that we speak with drinking.
Speaker D:It doesn't say she can't have wine.
David:It's excessive drinking.
David:It's pretty clear.
David:And why should you not have excessive drinking and do a lot of talking for all those BC people that know exactly what that means?
David:Because sometimes when you do excessive drinking, you do a lot of talking.
Speaker D:Get it?
David:Okay, so those are very bad, bad combinations.
David:So there's a specific reason the Holy Spirit put these two together.
Speaker D:Sometimes when people drink, it doesn't just.
David:Loosen up their mind, but their tongues.
David:And out comes a lot of things that should not have ever been spoken.
David:Don't lie.
David:Of course, the Lord forgives people for that.
David:But don't encourage it and don't facilitate it and don't participate in it.
Speaker D:But these are wonderful women.
David:This is not something where Titus is going, oh, they're all bad, or Paul's going to Titus.
Speaker D:They're all bad.
David:They're all bad.
David:These are phenomenal women.
David:These wonderful women are to teach what is good and to encourage younger women to love their husbands.
David:I just got to get this nailed down right here.
David:I don't care what anybody says.
David:This should not get lost.
David:The older women are supposed to teach what is good.
David:And in the church, there are people that say, well, no, no, no, women can't.
David:Okay, first of all, that's not what it says.
David:You are taking what Paul is talking about in doctrine and applying it to Every other possible realm.
David:Women are encouraged to teach specifically younger women.
David:So don't say women can't teach.
David:What Paul was talking about in the passage where it's women are not supposed to peak is specifically.
David:And it's in the context in lieu of doctrine.
David:But that doesn't mean they don't teach.
David:In fact, prophesying.
David:Let's just use that for a split second.
David:It's 1 Corinthians 12 and 1 Corinthians 14.
David:Talk about prophesying.
David:Now, people always think of prophesying.
David:They think somebody goes, and then they start acting like walking around like Michael Jackson or something weird.
David:Vuba, vuba, vuba, ding.
David:Oh, I'm going to prophesy.
David:Blah, blah, blah, blah.
David:Okay, first of all, the Bible says that prophecy is speaking unto men to edification, exhortation, and comfort.
David:Did you hear what I said?
David:Speaking unto men to edification, exhortation and comfort.
David:When you prophesy, it doesn't mean you got hit by a bolt of lightning.
David:That's number one.
David:It can happen, but it doesn't have to be that.
David:Number two, the scripture is very clear.
David:All men and women, because it says everybody in the church can prophesy.
David:So all people can speak unto edification, exhortation, and comfort.
David:Got it.
David:Not complex.
Speaker D:I'd like to leave you with this deep thought before we're going to break.
David:For our trivia question, but here's a really deep thought.
David:If women could not teach younger men, there would be a lot of younger men who would never be taught by a parent.
David:Is that incredibly ridiculous?
David:You already know that's dumb.
David:You don't even have to build a theology around it.
David:You can just go, oh, yeah, that's dumb.
David:Yes.
David:It's very specific what Paul is talking about, about being silent.
David:And in that particular scene, there's a very, very great difference in how they.
Speaker D:Were set up in the church.
David:In fact, in the early temples, especially when they were expounding on doctrine, the.
Speaker D:Men would be on the right and the women would be on the left.
David:And what Paul mainly addressed is women going, hey, Harry, what does he mean by that?
Speaker D:Talking in the middle of the church.
David:While the people are talking.
Speaker D:That's a bad call.
David:That's why the scripture says, ask your husbands at home.
David:That's what that all has to do with.
David:But I want to make sure you understand something.
David:Women are a beautiful creation of God and give it the credit, God made man.
Speaker D:And many say this, and you have.
David:To enjoy it because it's cute.
Speaker D:And then he went and refined a.
David:Man by making a woman.
David:That's cute.
David:I mean, I like it.
David:And without women in our lives, there's a lot of trouble.
David:I'd like to see everybody procreate without women.
Speaker D:Hello.
David:Get it.
David:Okay, so my point in saying all of that is just to understand what he's trying to do.
David:He's not trying to put women in a box.
David:He's trying to honor them for what they're doing.
David:It's tell him, hey, watch yourself.
David:Don't get too wild, don't get too woolly, don't be drinking and start talking a whole bunch.
David:That's a bad plan.
David:Don't do that.
David:Teach what's good.
David:So you encourage younger women to love their husbands and to love their children.
Speaker D:And to be self controlled.
David:When we get back from our trivia question, I'm going to really dive into that because I have a very pointed position that I'm going to take.
David:Some of you may not like it, but then again, you speak for the author and not the audience.
David:Okay, so let's take a deep breath.
David:How does he do all that without breathing?
David:That's what I ask my daughter when she's talking to me.
David:Here's your first trivia question.
Speaker D:All of these trivia questions are about angels.
David:Not angels, angels.
David:The angel of the Lord appeared to this man and he said, arise and.
Speaker D:Take the young child and his mother.
David:And flee to Egypt and be there until I bring you word.
David:For Herod is seeking the young child to destroy him.
David:Who's the young man the Lord appeared to?
David:Who did the angel of the Lord?
David:Who did the angel of the Lord say that to?
David:Who had that dream?
David:Who had that encounter where the angel of the Lord appeared to him and says, arise, Take the young child and his mom hit the road, go to Egypt, be there until I tell you to leave.
David:Herod is looking to take him out.
Speaker D:What's the young man that heard that.
David:Message from an angel?
David: -: David: -: David: -: Speaker D:Okay, I'm going to send you up to the website.
Speaker D:Let me tell you a couple things on the website.
David:There's cool stuff on the website.
David:The modified schedule is up there.
David:There's also some cool links, articles, encouraging videos and audios and a place to give.
David:So here's where I will shamelessly use the you have two days to give to deduct it line.
David:Oh, you guys already know that.
David:Here's the bottom line.
David:For those that do not know we did pay rent.
David:Praise the Lord.
David:We are also very low, but praise the Lord.
David:We paid the rent.
Speaker D:That's all we care.
David:We say pay the rent, pay the rent.
David:But we are low.
David:And so if you're going to give and you wanted to apply for this year, please do so.
David:If not, then hit it on the first that's fine.
David:Second Corinthians 9:6,7.
David:The point is this.
David:Whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly.
David:Whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
David:Each one must give as he has decided in his heart.
David:Don't let me or any other person manipulate you into giving ever.
David:You never give reluctantly, the scripture says, not reluctantly or under compulsion.
David:For God loves a cheerful giver.
Speaker D:Make sure when you give, your money.
David:Is smiling and so are you.
David:Okay?
David:Otherwise, keep it.
David:How about that?
David:That's pretty straightforward.
David:Check it out.
David:By the way, on the website hemustincrease.org.
Speaker F:Prayer request hemostincrease.org praise report he mustincrease.org looking to give to this ministry.
Speaker F:He mustincrease.org confused by what's happening right now.
Speaker F:He must increase.org hemustincrease.org.
David:It'S such a happy sound.
David:I mean, it is.
David:It's such a happy sound.
David:You can't.
David:If you listen to that and frown, your name is Eeyore.
David:I mean, come on, it's my birthday.
David:I mean, that's just so happy.
David:I'm so happy for you.
Speaker E:I'll just say Happy Monday to me.
David:That was great.
David:I love it.
David:All right, here's the bottom line.
David:Here's your trivia question.
David:The angel of the Lord appeared to a man.
David:A young man.
Speaker D:Arise.
David:Take your young child and his mom.
David:Flee into Egypt.
David:Stay there until I bring word for you.
Speaker D:For Herod is seeking the life of.
David:The child who was the young man.
David:Matthew 2:13 I probably should have gave you the reference, although we just did.
Speaker D:Christmas.
David:I mean, seriously.
David:Matthew 2:13.
David: -: David: -: David: -: David: -: David:Davidemustincrease.org now this is not controversial.
David:It's straight out of scripture.
David:And I have no reservation teaching this.
David:Although some of you might think Spoon man has lost it.
David:Well, that's what the kids think on a regular basis.
David:Why not everybody else?
David:Here we go.
David:Going back to that text, it says this in the same way.
David:Older women are to be reverent in behavior.
David:Not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking.
David:Yes, they're put together pretty close.
David:They are to teach what is good.
David:So they may encourage the younger women to wait, wait, wait.
David:Love their husbands, to love their children, to be self controlled, pure workers at home, kind and in submission to their husbands.
Speaker D:So the word of God will not be slandered.
David:So let's just declare the word of God.
David:And I'm going to say something.
David:Some of you are going to go, what?
David:I haven't thought of it that way.
David:And you need to.
David:And here's what is said.
Speaker D:The younger women by the older women.
David:Are to be taught.
David:Watch.
David:To love their husbands and to love their children.
David:I would like to point out to.
Speaker D:You that it does not say to.
David:Love their children and then to love their husbands.
David:That is absolutely incorrect and sinful.
David:The first thing they're encouraged to do is love their husbands.
David:Now it is true that in many relationships the husband is kind of like a jerk or in many relationships the wife is kind of like a jerk.
Speaker D:It happens.
David:Because guess what sin is in the world and there are jerky people.
David:You're not going to change that.
David:So you may as well just acknowledge that until the Lord comes back.
David:But the scripture is clear.
David:The parents, mom and dad, male and female.
David:No homosexual, no transgender garbage.
David:None of that's permitted.
David:The mom and the dad are supposed to love each other first, then the children.
David:Otherwise I'll just make it as clear as I can.
David:You're giving the opportunity for a divided parent leadership.
David:And what happens when there's division?
David:When a house is divided, it will fall.
David:Never ever do the kids get the priority from the spouses over the spouses.
David:And you're thinking, but that's so wrong.
David:Everything should be sacrificial for the kids.
David:If you want to have good kids, then the parents have to be united, period.
David:And this idea that you can side.
Speaker D:With the kids against the other spouse.
David:Is stupid and sinful.
Speaker D:Wow, Dave, wow.
David:I read an article recently by a very well respected Christian publication saying that children come first.
David:Absolutely incorrect.
David:The husband and the wife and the family need to be one and through that unity, they are to minister to and parent the children together.
David:And while parents may make many sacrifices for their kids, they cannot sacrifice their unity.
David:If one child says it to one parent, that child says it to both parents.
David:That's how it always should be.
David:That's how families should be.
Speaker D:And then when the children get older.
David:And depart, guess what?
Speaker D:They will have that instruction when they.
David:Establish their new family.
David:And that how is it supposed to be?
David:That is what God calls for.
David:Remember, it's Adam and Eve first, then the kids.
David:There's a reason for that.
David:There's a reason for that unity.
David:Now, some people are like, well, my husband's abusive, or my wife is this.
David:I'm not talking about that.
David:I'm talking about the general rule of living together as husband and wife.
David:As parents.
David:Love the spouse, then the children.
David:The answer to your trivia question, who was the young man, by the way?
David:The angel said, arise, take your child.
Speaker D:And your mother, get into Egypt.
David:I'll bring you back when it's time.
David:Because Herod is seeking to destroy the young child.
David:The young man who heard that message was Joseph.
David:Joseph heard that message.
David:All right, we'll take a short break, then come back.
David:You're listening to the David Spoon Experience right here on Kaam 770, the truth station here in Texas.
David:Short break.
Speaker D:We'll be back.
David:Don't go anywhere.
Speaker A:What is the David Spoon experience?
Speaker G:Isaiah, chapter 63, verse 8 through 9, says this.
Speaker G:He said, surely they are my people, sons who will not be false to me.
David:And so he became their savior.
Speaker G:In all their distress.
David:He too was distressed.
Speaker G:So I want to make sure you understand.
Speaker G:We've talked about this before.
Speaker G:You've heard some of my testimony.
Speaker G:If you want to really get a better hand on my testimony, I'll shamelessly plug the Broken for His Glory Book, which contains the testimony.
David:But you can get it for free.
Speaker G:If you do it through Kindle.
Speaker G:And then otherwise it's like seven bucks or something.
Speaker G:That's not very much.
Speaker G:It's kind of a fascinating journey on becoming saved and then going through bad churches or a bad church and then coming back into good church.
David:Right?
Speaker G:That's not always easy to do.
Speaker G:One of the big premises of the book and of my entire Christian journey is a passage like this which says, he said, surely they are my people, sons who will not be false to me.
Speaker G:And so he became their savior.
Speaker G:And in all their distress, he too was distressed.
Speaker G:I think it's important for you and I to understand the level to which God has put himself or placed Himself.
Speaker G:He's not incomplete without us in the theological term that God can exist completely independently and doesn't need us, but he bears with us or connects to us in such a way that he feels with us.
Speaker G:And so I think it's important for you and I to grasp that when Paul was on the road to Damascus, and then the Lord appears to him, right?
Speaker G:And we've talked about this before, you.
David:Know, knocks him, you know, knocks him.
Speaker G:Off his donkey and blinds him, okay?
Speaker G:Now you just have to imagine you're on a donkey, bamo.
Speaker G:You're on the ground.
Speaker G:Okay?
David:Okay.
Speaker G:Not on a comfy table or a comfy chair or a comfy bed.
Speaker G:On the ground and you're blind.
David:So this is a real wake up call.
Speaker G:And then Jesus says to him, saul, before he becomes Paul, you know, why are you persecuting me?
Speaker G:And what does Paul say, Saul say?
Speaker G:He says, who are you?
David:Right?
David:Because this is like, you know, this is, you know, outer limits stuff right here.
Speaker G:And then Jesus goes, I'm Jesus, whom you're persecuting.
David:Ah, but the irony behind that is.
Speaker G:That Jesus made the identification with the church because Saul was persecuting the church.
Speaker G:But Jesus goes, I'm the one you're persecuting.
Speaker G:Now, see how he connects himself to the people.
