It's totally terrific, totally transforming and totally triumphant Tuesday as we find unity from the Father, through the Son and by the Spirit, all for the glory of God Almighty.

We pick it back up in Romans chapter eight.

Basically, we're going to pick it up a little bit at the end of verse four and then on to verse five.

David Spoon:

The redeeming work of Jesus Christ was given to us that the accomplishment of the law could be fulfilled through his work, allowing us to no longer be found lacking in righteousness.

David Spoon:

But today's focus is specifically tied to identifying the old nature and the flesh as well as the new nature and the Spirit.

David Spoon:

Verse 5 gives us the key to understanding whether we're actually following the old nature or the born again spirit.

David Spoon:

People who follow their old sinful nature do something very specific.

David Spoon:

They continually think about things tied to that nature.

David Spoon:

In other words, those who walk in the old and not in the spirit can recognize this simply by examining what you're focusing on.

David Spoon:

What are you thinking about?

Aha.

David Spoon:

Finally, Paul brings up a critical point.

David Spoon:

Those who think in their old nature, in the flesh, they're living in that they're creating a form of death.

David Spoon:

We mentioned this last week, but it's just too important to ignore.

David Spoon:

Those that live in the flesh, in their old nature, they're creating a form of death for themselves.

David Spoon:

But when we think and operate and live in the spirit and by our new nature, a form of life and peace comes from God.

David Spoon:

So it's simple.

David Spoon:

Would you rather have life and peace or death?

David Spoon:

While growing up in a Jewish family, he made a wrong turn towards drug abuse.

Number two, besides a praise report, it can be a prayer request because we have some people that just have a lot of things going on.

I want to make sure you understand that because you get prayer, it doesn't mean everything has to Be disastrous every time you get it, every time you pray, sometimes things will be going good.

You just want to know, follow the Lord.

David Spoon:

Just do it wisely.

I mean, I think some Christians, and I want to say this carefully, some Christians seem to be afraid of success or things going well, and they walk around going, when's the other shoe going to drop?

David Spoon:

When's the other shoe going to drop?

David Spoon:

That's the wrong spirit.

David Spoon:

You can just be praying, I just want to stay right where I am in the Lord.

David Spoon:

I want to be steadfast.

David Spoon:

I mean, what's wrong with.

Nothing is wrong with that.

It's wonderful.

It could be something serious.

It could be relation.

David Spoon:

It could be finance, it could be health.

It could be any of that.

Whatever's going on, that's what's going on.

Because the answer, I don't care what anybody says anywhere in the universe.

Son, he says something that all of us need to take heed to, and that is he said, here, Jesus.

This is the one that I want you to hear.

Their opinion has no eternal value, Period.

How could we possibly care?

Never be ashamed of Jesus or his words.

Remember, God created the universe.

The dude can write a book, and then a always be ready.

To serve.

We're ready.

Does that mean that everybody will love everything we do?

David Spoon:

No, it actually does not mean that.

In fact, it does not mean that.

And in reality, it does not mean that.

Here's something I came across when I was reading my devotions today.

Just consider this, okay?

David Spoon:

Jesus is approached by the rich young man, right?

David Spoon:

In Mark, chapter nine, the story in Mark, chapter nine, that process there.

David Spoon:

And in Mark, chapter 10, the rich man, specifically chapter 10, the rich man says, what do I gotta do to get eternal life?

David Spoon:

And then Jesus gives them the basic commandments.

David Spoon:

Everybody knows this story.

David Spoon:

And then he said, all those I've kept.

David Spoon:

And he probably really believed that, by the way.

David Spoon:

But then Jesus, it says, Jesus loved him and said, go give up everything.

David Spoon:

Sell everything you have and come and follow me.

David Spoon:

Loving other people does not mean you don't say anything.

David Spoon:

In fact, Jesus loved him.

David Spoon:

And because he loved him, he told him, you got to get rid of that one God you have in your life.

David Spoon:

That's not really God.

David Spoon:

Because the rich young man had mammon as his God.

David Spoon:

And Jesus, in loving him, told him, you got to get rid of that.

David Spoon:

You got to dump that.

David Spoon:

So when we're ready to serve, it can be an encouraging word.

David Spoon:

It can also be loving somebody by saying, you got to stop doing that.

David Spoon:

You got to stop living there.

David Spoon:

You got to stop having that attitude.

David Spoon:

You gotta stop having that disposition, whether it's a friend, a brother, a sister, a mom, a dad, a child, it doesn't matter.

David Spoon:

Sometimes you have to say in love.

David Spoon:

Loving them genuinely, that's just not good, man.

David Spoon:

Don't do that.

David Spoon:

Get rid of that.

David Spoon:

Always ready maybe for that word and maybe for this word.

David Spoon:

Stop forgetting how much Jesus loves you.

David Spoon:

Or maybe this word, he knows you and he wants you anyway.

David Spoon:

How about that?

David Spoon:

That's one of the weird things that doesn't seem to happen a lot.

David Spoon:

Yikes.

We should be a little bit more on target with that.

And that is simply laid down as Paul is laying down his theology.

David Spoon:

It's based on those who walk according to the Spirit.

David Spoon:

And not according to the flesh.

David Spoon:

What he's doing is making the big distinguishment.

David Spoon:

In chapter seven, what Paul talked about was the struggle with sin.

David Spoon:

He talks about salvation in chapter six, the struggle within in chapter seven.

David Spoon:

And chapter eight is the solution to the mess.

David Spoon:

First, it's in Jesus Christ.

David Spoon:

Remember, I thank God through Jesus Christ, my Lord, when he says, O wretched man that I am, who will save me from this body of death?

David Spoon:

I thank God through Jesus Christ my Lord.

David Spoon:

The answer is God allowing Jesus Christ, providing Jesus Christ, coordinating Jesus Christ to die on the cross for us.

David Spoon:

That is the answer.

David Spoon:

And now that that answer has been understood, where does the application of that answer come in?

David Spoon:

And that is simply this.

David Spoon:

Because Jesus ascended, he sent the Holy Spirit to continue the ministry Jesus had on earth.

David Spoon:

And it is walking in that ministry of the Holy Spirit that we are empowered to walk in a way that fulfills the desires that God has for us.

David Spoon:

And some of us get caught in the war.

David Spoon:

Some of us feel like there's two of us.

David Spoon:

Don't you?

David Spoon:

Don't just we're not being weird.

David Spoon:

It's just like there's one part of me that just like loves the Lord, then there's this other part of me that just goes off on these weird tangents, right?

David Spoon:

That's the warfare between the old and the new.

David Spoon:

That's the warfare between the flesh and the Holy Spirit.

David Spoon:

And the Holy Spirit is trying to drag you and I onto one side and the flesh is trying to drag you on another side.

David Spoon:

And I want to make sure you understand what that war really encompasses.

David Spoon:

The warfare is taking place in your being and your flesh is the access point that Satan's using.

David Spoon:

And on the other side is the Holy Spirit accessing your born again spirit.

David Spoon:

And you're in the war and that's why there's conflict and that's why there's struggle.

David Spoon:

That's why when sometimes you pray.

David Spoon:

Let me just make this really easy.

David Spoon:

Tell me if you can relate to this.

David Spoon:

When you pray, there are times where all of a sudden an at random thought pops in and you lose your track of prayer.

David Spoon:

You think that's an accident?

David Spoon:

Lord, I'm praying for my neighbor.

David Spoon:

I just pray that my neighbor and I get along.

David Spoon:

And Lord, hey, I should probably really do something about fertilizing my grass, that kind of thing right there.

David Spoon:

That's what I'm talking about.

David Spoon:

You know exactly what I'm talking about.

David Spoon:

I don't even know why we don't discuss this more openly.

David Spoon:

Sometimes people will be watching Something, looking at something, checking out, something in kingdom issues.

David Spoon:

And then out of left field comes the most bizarre thought.

David Spoon:

And then we go down on a tangent.

David Spoon:

Why?

David Spoon:

To distract us, to push us away, to lure us away.

David Spoon:

So this is coming down to a fight between your born again spirit and your old you, between the devil and the world and the Holy Spirit of God and Jesus interceding for you.

David Spoon:

That's what's coming down to.

David Spoon:

You're in a war.

David Spoon:

You're in an eternal internal, not eternal, internal war.

David Spoon:

And for everybody who does that same thing, it just drives me nuts, especially theologically.

David Spoon:

Well, the old man's crucified, Dave, so we never have to worry about that.

There's never any recourse from the old man being crucified.

David Spoon:

Death is still around.

That is a recourse from the old man.

David Spoon:

And he is crucified positionally.

And now practically, God is giving us the tools to walk away and above.

That's what's going on.

And when we get back to the most important element in this, I think in this first 16, 17 verses is what we're going to cover in the meantime, which of the disciples said to Philip, we found him, of whom Moses and the law and the prophets did right.

At least he didn't have the audacity to say he never said anything about marriage.

He said Jesus was wrong about marriage and that marriage should be more than between a man and a woman.

And then he proceeded to say this statement, ladies and gentlemen, he said this now this isn't even the thing that's irritated.

Then he proceeded to say this.

This is a man who's supposed to be representing Jesus Christ as a minister.

God knows when you're walking in the spirit or when you're walking in the flesh.

I got a bad message for you.

Satan most likely knows when you're walking in the spirit or in the flesh.

We often don't know when we're walking in the spirit in the flesh.

And that's the person that needs to know.

And so Paul in Romans 8:5 gives the defense definitive, definitive answer.

Look, if you're always thinking about things of the flesh, you're walking in the flesh.

David Spoon:

If you're always thinking about things in the spirit, you're walking in the spirit.

David Spoon:

Remember we said about Colossians 3, 1, 2, we're supposed to seek the things that are above.

David Spoon:

And in verse two, it says, set your mind on things above.

David Spoon:

Where we set our thinking process determines largely on whether we're operating in the spirit or in the flesh.

David Spoon:

And when Peter said to Jesus, oh, you're not going to get crucified, that's a bad idea.

David Spoon:

We're not going to let that happen.

David Spoon:

Even though he had a good motive behind it.

David Spoon:

That doesn't mean anything.

David Spoon:

Jesus said as he looked at his disciples and said this.

David Spoon:

Get behind me, Satan.

David Spoon:

You have in mind the things of man and not the things of God.

David Spoon:

We've got to do a better job of setting our mind above.

David Spoon:

We've got to do a better job of setting our mind on things regarding the kingdom of God.

David Spoon:

Where's the kingdom of God?

David Spoon:

Where God is king.

David Spoon:

And what we should be praying is where he's not king, so to speak.

David Spoon:

We should be praying, thy kingdom come, thy will be done.

David Spoon:

We want the kingdom of God to be operating in all these areas.

David Spoon:

And a big way for us to be able to tell.

David Spoon:

An indicator, a buzzer is the stuff that goes on between our left and right ear.

David Spoon:

No, there's nothing fleshly, carnal or spiritual about.

David Spoon:

I'm going to make some, you know, some lasagna for dinner, for the kids.

David Spoon:

There's nothing that's not what we're talking about, the fleshly is when it's all about our self gain, even if it's somebody else's gain, but on our that we might receive drip blessings.

David Spoon:

That's also selfish.

David Spoon:

This should be about Jesus.

David Spoon:

This should be about the kingdom of God.

David Spoon:

This should be about being vehicles of his love and his grace and his mercy.

David Spoon:

This should be about truth.

David Spoon:

The truth is love is not love.

David Spoon:

That's a flesh touch.

David Spoon:

Satan uses that for God so loved the love that he gave.

David Spoon:

That's love.

David Spoon:

The Holy Spirit uses that.

David Spoon:

That's the born again spirit going, yes sir.

David Spoon:

And when we look at Jesus, and Satan challenged him.

David Spoon:

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

David Spoon:

That bread that Jesus is talking about is the word of God which feeds your born again spirit, which is the new you.

David Spoon:

That's what he's talking about.

David Spoon:

That's.

David Spoon:

We gotta get into that.

David Spoon:

And when we have so much mind time to focus on us that the spotlight's on us or our flesh, our advantage.

David Spoon:

Us, us, us, us, us.

It's amazing.

Philippians 2 says, Consider not your own things only, but also the things of others.

David Spoon:

When you take other people into genuine concern and love and appreciation and share their struggle, you are walking in the spirit.

David Spoon:

You are fulfilling the love and the law of Christ.

David Spoon:

But when it's all just like that movie Little Nemo, all those birds, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me.

David Spoon:

That's a whole lot of kernel and a whole lot of flesh and a whole lot of old man.

David Spoon:

So Paul just says it very clearly.

David Spoon:

He doesn't even pull.

David Spoon:

He doesn't even care.

You have to love them.

I love this about Paul.

Those that live according to the flesh set their mind on the things of the flesh.

Those who live according to the spirit set their mind on the things of the spirit.

That's what the word of God says.

That's the parameter we use to determine.

That's what's required for anything to be possible to him that believes.

You can't have doubt and faith.

They wash each other out.

Move the doubt out, have a mustard seed of faith and move the mountain.

That's what we're told to do.

I don't think people should see it as anything else.

And what I don't think people understand is that is the spiritual warfare.

David Spoon:

That is a big part of spiritual warfare.

David Spoon:

That what happens is we try to seize on faith.

David Spoon:

And the enemy, using either our flesh, the world, or directly attempting us, tries to get us to squish the faith and allow doubt to rise against it.

David Spoon:

That's one of his tactics, which is why we have the shield of faith that's supposed to protect us.

David Spoon:

So faith becomes a weapon almost in many ways.

David Spoon:

The people will say defensive, and it is.

David Spoon:

But they also used those shields to hit.

David Spoon:

And so it's mostly defensive, but also offensive.

David Spoon:

And it's a weapon that we need to think of it this way.

David Spoon:

If Satan throws a fiery dart, it's a flaming dart.

David Spoon:

Then that shield of faith is a shield of water that puts the doubt and the dart out.

David Spoon:

That's how we have to think of it.

David Spoon:

You see?

David Spoon:

Yes.

Yeah.

David Spoon:

It's verse six coming off of verse five on Romans.

Now, here's first five, and then I'll do it real fast.

Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh.

David Spoon:

Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on things of the Spirit.

Verse 6.

For to be carnally minded.

David Spoon:

For to be carnally minded, which is also fleshly minded, to be carnally minded, fleshly minded is death.

David Spoon:

But to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

David Spoon:

You want to know another way to tell whether you're operating in the old or new?

David Spoon:

You how much of your life is operating in life and peace and how much of it is operating in death.

David Spoon:

Now, with death comes all of the negative elements that are connected to that.

David Spoon:

So in other words, death in and of itself.

David Spoon:

The idea behind this is for all of us to understand.

David Spoon:

This is death and everything that leads up to death.

David Spoon:

And what's being said by the apostle under the leading of the Holy Spirit is, look, set your mind on things that have to do with the Spirit, not the flesh.

David Spoon:

And here's a reason why.

David Spoon:

Because if you're fleshly minded, it's a drag, it's dark.

David Spoon:

That's a great way to understand that.

David Spoon:

It's dismal, it's discouraging, it's depressing, it's downtrodden, it's all those negative Ds that go in there.

David Spoon:

But if we're spiritually minded, if we're connected to the spirit, if we're walking in the new born again man, there is life and there is peace.

David Spoon:

And I got a message for you.

David Spoon:

Jesus is the prince of peace, right?

David Spoon:

Nobody's gonna argue that.

David Spoon:

Correct, Dave?

David Spoon:

Jesus is the prince of peace.

David Spoon:

So when you as a Christian are operating with Jesus in your heart by faith, the Holy Spirit in your life by temple, and you find out that you have peace rolling through you.

David Spoon:

It means that you're connected to the head, which is Christ.

David Spoon:

But if there's nothing but darkness, that's what's.

David Spoon:

That's.

David Spoon:

Therein lies the fight.

David Spoon:

Get that?

Therein lies the fight.

And what I'm trying to say to you is I think we're out, aren't we?

David Spoon was born and raised in a Jewish home in Detroit, Michigan. He attended a private Hebrew school called Hillel Hebrew Academy. David was bar mitzvah-ed at the age of thirteen. Not long after, he was involved in drug abuse and trafficking. After hearing the Gospel for the first time at age seventeen, David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. A few months later, David had a dramatic experience with God. Immediately set free from years of excessive drug use, he committed himself to ministry and to furthering the Kingdom of God.

He attended Arizona Bible College, Northern Arizona University, and Life Pacific College, graduating summa-cum-laude in their Ministry and Leadership program. He also graduated with honors from Regent University with a master’s degree in Theological Studies and earned his Doctor of Ministry degree in Strategic Christian Ministry at Liberty University.

He is one of a few individuals holding ministerial ordinations from three separate denominations: Heritage Free Baptist Organization, 1981; Independent Pentecostal Ministers Association, 1985; and Vineyard Valley Association, 1988. He was also the Chaplain for the Flagstaff Police Department. In addition, David was the senior pastor of Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Flagstaff.

In addition, David started and co-hosted two different live Christian call-in radio talk shows. He hosted the very popular radio show “The David Spoon Experience” on KPRZ 1210 and a show called “To Know Him,” which aired on 88.9 on the F.M. dial-in Temecula, California at 1:00 p.m., Monday through Fridays. He was also the Director of Local Ministry for Salem Media Group in San Diego, California.

David is married to his best friend, Noelle. He has three children and seven grandchildren, plus their two dogs named Levi and Bert. On March 18th, 2019, he started “The David Spoon Experience” in Texas and is growing with his audience of awesome believers and non-believers alike.

He is the President of He Must Increase Ministry, a 501c3 ministry, and is hosting (again) the live daily radio show “The David Spoon Experience” with DJR Broadcasting in KAAM, on the 770 A.M. radio dial. The show is also on various apps and the Internet.
