10-09-2026 PART 1: When God Gives You What You Shouldn't Have Asked For

Section 1

Israel's demand for an earthly king in 1 Samuel 8 reveals a troubling spiritual reality: sometimes people ask God for something that represents a rejection of His leadership. Samuel was deeply troubled by the people's request, but God explained that their rejection was ultimately directed toward Him. They wanted a visible ruler instead of trusting the Lord who had delivered and sustained them. Dr. Dave highlights an uncomfortable truth: God sometimes grants requests that are not in our best interests. Rather than immediately refusing, He may allow us to experience the consequences of our desires so we can learn the wisdom of surrender. Just because God permits something does not mean it was the wisest thing to request.

Section 2

Before granting Israel's demand, God instructed Samuel to explain the consequences. Their future king would draft their sons, take their daughters into service, claim their finest property, and demand portions of their harvests and livestock. The people imagined protection and prosperity, but they failed to consider the tremendous personal cost. Their desired solution would eventually consume their resources and restrict their freedom. Dr. Dave connects this warning to our own prayers, explaining that we sometimes imagine wonderful outcomes without considering the complications our requests might create. Even good desires can become spiritually dangerous when they matter more to us than God's approval. The issue is not whether we can ask boldly, but whether we trust God enough to accept His wisdom over our expectations.

Section 3

The perfect example of surrendered prayer appears in Mark 14:36, where Jesus addresses His Father with complete confidence, makes His request known, and ultimately submits to the Father's will. Dr. Dave identifies these essential elements: knowing whom we are addressing, believing in His ability, presenting our petition, and surrendering the outcome. God's answer may be yes, no, or wait, but every response must remain under His authority. Israel's mistake was seeking an earthly solution instead of trusting its heavenly King. That same danger confronts believers whenever political leaders, personal ambitions, or human solutions replace dependence upon God. Acts 17:25 reminds us that even our breath comes from Him. Everything we possess and everything we desire must therefore remain subject to His wisdom. The greatest expression of faith is not demanding that God give us what we want, but trusting Him enough to say, "Not my will, but Yours be done."

David Spoon

David Spoon was born and raised in a Jewish home in Detroit, Michigan. He attended a private Hebrew school called Hillel Hebrew Academy. David was bar mitzvah-ed at the age of thirteen. Not long after, he was involved in drug abuse and trafficking. After hearing the Gospel for the first time at age seventeen, David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. A few months later, David had a dramatic experience with God. Immediately set free from years of excessive drug use, he committed himself to ministry and to furthering the Kingdom of God.

He attended Arizona Bible College, Northern Arizona University, and Life Pacific College, graduating summa-cum-laude in their Ministry and Leadership program. He also graduated with honors from Regent University with a master’s degree in Theological Studies and earned his Doctor of Ministry degree in Strategic Christian Ministry at Liberty University.

He is one of a few individuals holding ministerial ordinations from three separate denominations: Heritage Free Baptist Organization, 1981; Independent Pentecostal Ministers Association, 1985; and Vineyard Valley Association, 1988. He was also the Chaplain for the Flagstaff Police Department. In addition, David was the senior pastor of Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Flagstaff.

In addition, David started and co-hosted two different live Christian call-in radio talk shows. He hosted the very popular radio show “The David Spoon Experience” on KPRZ 1210 and a show called “To Know Him,” which aired on 88.9 on the F.M. dial-in Temecula, California at 1:00 p.m., Monday through Fridays. He was also the Director of Local Ministry for Salem Media Group in San Diego, California.

David is married to his best friend, Noelle. He has three children and seven grandchildren, plus their two dogs named Levi and Bert. On March 18th, 2019, he started “The David Spoon Experience” in Texas and is growing with his audience of awesome believers and non-believers alike.
