Ordinary life provides Paul with several powerful pictures of why those who labor should reasonably share in the benefits of their work. A soldier does not finance his own military service, someone planting a vineyard expects to enjoy its fruit, and a shepherd tending a flock can drink from its milk. Paul then strengthens the argument from Scripture: an ox should not be muzzled while treading grain. Dr. Dave explains that Paul is applying these principles to himself and Barnabas. They were investing spiritually in the Corinthians, and receiving material support in return would not have been inappropriate. The larger principle extends beyond finances: when someone faithfully pours into our spiritual lives, there should be a willingness to recognize, appreciate, and support the blessing God is providing through them.

Giving becomes something entirely different when it is viewed as a relationship with God rather than another bill that must be paid. Dr. Dave shares how he and Noelle support churches, ministries, resources, and individuals that genuinely help them or faithfully advance God’s work. Their approach is not limited to organizations agreeing with them on every secondary doctrine; the important question is whether the ministry faithfully honors the Father through the Son and by the Spirit. Home base should certainly be supported, but generosity can extend into many other places where God is working. Giving should become an adventure between the believer and the Lord—cheerful, willing, personal, and alive. Scripture even presents giving itself as ministry, transforming generosity from a mechanical obligation into an opportunity to participate personally in what God is doing.

Section 3

Paul’s strongest example appears when he willingly gives up a legitimate right because something greater is at stake. Although he could have requested support from the Corinthians, he refused to allow money to become an obstacle that might hinder someone from receiving the Gospel. Dr. Dave highlights the spirit behind that decision: Paul would rather personally endure hardship than create unnecessary suspicion about his motives or interfere with the message of Christ. That attitude reflects Jesus Himself, who surrendered everything so others could receive life. Christian ministry therefore cannot revolve around protecting personal privilege, recognition, comfort, or financial benefit. The message must remain more important than the messenger because people are saved and sustained through the Gospel. Sometimes the greatest use of a Christian right is willingly surrendering it so nothing gets in the way of someone seeing Jesus.
