09-11-2026 PART 1: Be Careful What You Ask God For
Section 1
Israel’s request for a human king revealed a deeper spiritual problem than dissatisfaction with Samuel’s corrupt sons. God explained that the people were ultimately rejecting Him as their King. Dr. Dave connects their decision with idolatry, emphasizing that an idol is not limited to something physically worshiped. Anything receiving the confidence, attention, devotion, or priority that belongs to God can begin occupying His rightful place. Even Abraham had to confront this danger when his love for Isaac threatened to become greater than it should have been. Believers can deeply love family, relationships, careers, possessions, and ministry, but nothing belongs ahead of the Lord. Jesus must remain first because everything else becomes spiritually distorted when something takes His place.

Samuel was deeply upset by Israel’s rejection, yet God told him that the people were simply treating Samuel the way they had repeatedly treated Him. The Lord then instructed Samuel to grant their request while clearly warning them what their desired king would eventually cost them. Dr. Dave identifies a sobering principle within that exchange: receiving what we request from God does not automatically mean we requested wisely. Sometimes believers become so determined to obtain something that they never seriously consider whether it belongs within God’s direction for their lives. God may even permit the request and allow the consequences to become the lesson. Prayer therefore involves more than repeatedly asking for what we want; it requires keeping God upon the throne while genuinely seeking what He wants.
Section 3
Israel wanted to become like the surrounding nations when God intended them to remain distinctly His people. Their mistake was exchanging greater dependence upon God for greater confidence in a worldly system. Saul would eventually demonstrate the painful consequences by taking people, property, and whatever else served his desires. Yet even within Israel’s poor decision, God’s mercy remained active, eventually providing David and continuing to work His purposes through their failures. The warning applies personally as well as corporately: Christians and churches must resist conforming themselves to the world simply because its methods appear desirable. Before insisting upon a particular relationship, job, financial answer, opportunity, or direction, believers should examine whether that desire is strengthening their dependence upon God or quietly replacing it. Sometimes the most merciful answer God can give us is not the answer we keep demanding.
