06-02-2026 PART 1: Standing Firm When Truth Is Challenged

Section 1

Opening in Matthew 27, Dr. Dave returns to Jesus standing before Pilate during one of the most pivotal moments in Scripture. Before examining the details of the trial, he reminds listeners that even the darkest moments in God’s story move toward resurrection, victory, and hope. Just as the crucifixion led to resurrection Sunday, believers facing difficult seasons today can trust that God is still working beyond what they presently see. The discussion then focuses on Pilate asking Jesus whether He is the King of the Jews. Contrary to interpretations that suggest ambiguity, Dr. Dave emphasizes that Jesus clearly affirms the statement. His response leaves no doubt about His identity, authority, and role as the promised Messiah. Even while standing before earthly power, Jesus remains completely confident in the truth of who He is.

Section 2

As the account unfolds, the religious leaders begin presenting accusation after accusation against Jesus. What surprises Pilate is not the charges themselves but Jesus’ refusal to defend Himself against false claims. Dr. Dave explains that Jesus responds differently to truth than He does to slander. When Pilate asks a legitimate question, Jesus answers directly. When false accusations are thrown at Him, He remains silent. The teaching becomes a practical lesson for believers who often feel compelled to answer every criticism, insult, or attack. While there are times for appropriate defense, there are also times to trust God and refuse to engage in fruitless arguments. Jesus demonstrates the wisdom of leaving ultimate judgment in God’s hands rather than feeling obligated to answer every hostile voice.

Section 3

Toward the close, the focus shifts to the relationship between governmental authority and obedience to God. Pilate represents one of the highest governmental powers in the world, yet Jesus’ ultimate allegiance remains with the Father. Dr. Dave points to numerous biblical examples, including Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, along with Peter and the apostles, showing that believers are called to obey governing authorities unless those authorities demand disobedience to God. When human commands directly contradict God’s Word, Scripture consistently places obedience to God first. The final section introduces Pilate’s attempt to release Jesus through the Passover custom of freeing a prisoner, revealing that Pilate himself recognized much of the case against Jesus was driven by envy rather than justice. The lesson concludes by reminding believers that truth remains truth regardless of political pressure, public opinion, or earthly authority.

He was also the Director of Local Ministry for Salem Media Group in San Diego, California.

David is married to his best friend, Noelle. He has three children and seven grandchildren, plus their two dogs named Levi and Bert. On March 18th, 2019, he started “The David Spoon Experience” in Texas and is growing with his audience of awesome believers and non-believers alike.
