The David Spoon Experience 11-27-23 part 1
A) Titus 3:3 reminds us that we were once like those who don’t believe - foolish, disobedient, and deceived. We thought that pleasures were the answer and justified our hatred for one another. It’s crucial for Christians to remember that before we became followers of Christ, we were the very mess that we now see in others. After some time in the faith, we tend to forget that we were the ones who needed salvation. So, it shouldn’t surprise us that the people we engage with are just like we used to be but have yet to accept Jesus.
B) Paul then reminds us of the difference - it was the kindness and love of God directed towards us. There are three simple ways to recapture that initial love. First, ensure an active relationship with the Holy Spirit, as Romans 5:5 teaches us that God’s love is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Second, remember how it felt when we first accepted Jesus and how God’s love surrounded us and made everything whole. Third, maintain a strong desire and commitment to draw closer to God through Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit so that our fellowship with the Lord Almighty can reignite our hearts.
C) It’s worth noting that these gifts - the love and kindness of God - were not granted according to any righteous works we had done. As verse 5 specifically states, our Christian faith is not based on righteous deeds. It didn’t start because of them, it doesn’t continue because of them, and it won’t end because of them.
D) As the apostle makes clear, it’s all due to God’s mercy that he saved us. It’s through the regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, which is abundantly poured out on us through Jesus Christ. We have been justified by His grace. This regeneration literally means to be born again - born again with a spirit that loves to fellowship with God.
