10-07-2026 PART 2: When Your Words Need a Spiritual Checkup

Section 1

Ephesians 4 calls believers to live a life worthy of the calling they have received, and Dr. Dave describes that as a walk carrying genuine spiritual weight. Grace and mercy are never permission to live however we please; God saves us so that our lives can increasingly reflect Jesus. First Peter 2 brings that calling directly into our speech by telling believers to put away malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander, and harmful words. 10072026B Dr. Dave focuses on two especially dangerous forms of harmful speech: criticism and complaining. Neither sounds particularly dramatic, which may be why they slip so easily into everyday Christian life. Yet if God is practically transforming us to look more like Christ, then what comes out of our mouths matters. Our speech should increasingly demonstrate the character of the One whose name we carry.

Section 2

Criticism becomes dangerous when it turns us into fault finders. Someone may do ninety-eight things wonderfully, yet we can become consumed with the two things we dislike. A person might demonstrate tremendous loyalty, kindness, and love, while our attention remains fixed on the one irritating characteristic we cannot overlook. Dr. Dave contrasts that tendency with God’s enormous mercy toward us. If God constantly cataloged every flaw in our thoughts, words, and actions, none of us would survive the examination. 10072026B Complaining presents the other side of the problem because it stands opposite thanksgiving. Scripture calls believers to give thanks in everything, trusting that God remains involved even when circumstances are difficult. Both criticism and complaining can therefore reveal something deeper happening within the heart, and both can turn our words away from encouragement and toward tearing others down.

Section 3

Words possess tremendous power, which is why Scripture commands believers to speak what builds others up and benefits those who listen. Dr. Dave openly includes himself in the challenge, acknowledging his own struggles with criticism and complaining rather than presenting the lesson as something meant only for everybody else. 10072026B When we begin mentally tearing someone apart and prepare to express it verbally, the Holy Spirit provides something critically important: self-control. We cannot simply excuse destructive speech by claiming we cannot help ourselves. The Spirit of God lives within believers, enabling us to stop, reconsider, and choose words that bring grace instead. The people around us already carry enough burdens without receiving additional discouragement from us. Before speaking, ask whether your words will add another burden to someone’s life—or become part of the grace that helps them carry it.

David Spoon

David Spoon was born and raised in a Jewish home in Detroit, Michigan. He attended a private Hebrew school called Hillel Hebrew Academy. David was bar mitzvah-ed at the age of thirteen. Not long after, he was involved in drug abuse and trafficking. After hearing the Gospel for the first time at age seventeen, David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. A few months later, David had a dramatic experience with God. Immediately set free from years of excessive drug use, he committed himself to ministry and to furthering the Kingdom of God.

He attended Arizona Bible College, Northern Arizona University, and Life Pacific College, graduating summa-cum-laude in their Ministry and Leadership program. He also graduated with honors from Regent University with a master’s degree in Theological Studies and earned his Doctor of Ministry degree in Strategic Christian Ministry at Liberty University.

He is one of a few individuals holding ministerial ordinations from three separate denominations: Heritage Free Baptist Organization, 1981; Independent Pentecostal Ministers Association, 1985; and Vineyard Valley Association, 1988. He was also the Chaplain for the Flagstaff Police Department. In addition, David was the senior pastor of Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Flagstaff.

In addition, David started and co-hosted two different live Christian call-in radio talk shows. He hosted the very popular radio show “The David Spoon Experience” on KPRZ 1210 and a show called “To Know Him,” which aired on 88.9 on the F.M. dial-in Temecula, California at 1:00 p.m., Monday through Fridays. He was also the Director of Local Ministry for Salem Media Group in San Diego, California.

David is married to his best friend, Noelle. He has three children and seven grandchildren, plus their two dogs named Levi and Bert. On March 18th, 2019, he started “The David Spoon Experience” in Texas and is growing with his audience of awesome believers and non-believers alike.

He is the President of He Must Increase Ministry, a 501c3 ministry, and is hosting (again) the live daily radio show “The David Spoon Experience” with DJR Broadcasting in KAAM, on the 770 A.M. radio dial. The show is also on various apps and the Internet.
