09172026 PART 2: Freedom That Chooses to Serve

Section 1

When Jesus does not meet our expectations, faith can become vulnerable to disappointment. Dr. Dave’s devotional, “Trust Jesus Even When He Offends Your Expectations,” points to John the Baptist questioning Jesus while imprisoned because circumstances looked nothing like he had imagined. Yet an unexpected pathway does not mean God’s plan has failed. The response remains the same principle emphasized earlier: trust, delight, commit, and rest—lean on the Lord, love the Lord, lift everything to Him, and let it go. His ways remain higher and wiser even when believers cannot understand them. Rather than stumbling because Jesus does not follow our preferred plan, Christians can keep their hearts soft and their faith strong, trusting that God understands the entire picture while we see only a small portion.

Section 2

Christian liberty reaches its highest expression when we willingly restrict ourselves for someone else’s spiritual benefit. Concluding 1 Corinthians 8, the apostle explains that if eating meat causes another believer to stumble, he would rather surrender that freedom completely than damage his brother or sister. Dr. Dave stresses that this principle works in both directions: believers with greater liberty should not mock those with stronger restrictions, while more legalistic Christians should not condemn those who possess greater freedom. The issue is consideration. Sometimes love means waiting, being patient, or voluntarily abstaining from something perfectly permissible because another person matters more than proving our freedom. Jesus calls His followers beyond simply loving neighbors as themselves toward loving one another with the sacrificial love He demonstrated toward them.

Section 3

Moving into 1 Corinthians 9 reveals another dimension of freedom: liberty is not only the freedom to refrain from something but also the freedom to sacrifice and serve. The Corinthians themselves demonstrated the investment Paul had poured into them through prayer, teaching, labor, and ministry. Although he possessed legitimate rights as an apostle, he willingly surrendered some of those rights so nothing would unnecessarily interfere with presenting the Gospel. Barnabas followed a similar approach. Their decision was situational rather than a universal requirement for every minister, but it demonstrated a willingness to work and sacrifice for the benefit of others. Believers likewise have areas where God personally calls them to give, serve, sacrifice, or pour themselves into others simply because they love Him. The greatest use of Christian freedom is not proving what we can do, but choosing what will best serve someone else.
