Joyanne’s call brought together answered prayer, encouragement, and a personal reminder of how God can bring hope during difficult seasons. She connected the biblical significance of the eighth day with new beginnings and shared how seeing 888 during one of the saddest periods of her life became personally meaningful after she prayed about it and later heard teaching associating eight with new beginnings. Looking back, Joyanne could see that her circumstances eventually changed and that God rescued her through a season when she felt overwhelmed and persecuted for her faith. Her testimony became a natural bridge back into First Peter: suffering does not eliminate hope. Christians can endure difficult seasons because their confidence is ultimately anchored in Christ rather than whatever circumstances happen to surround them.

Peter’s instruction to always be prepared to explain our hope does not require Christians to memorize a complicated formula. Dr. Dave emphasizes that believers already possess something tremendously powerful—their personal experience with Jesus. Someone might explain that Jesus saved them, delivered them, spoke to them, listened when they prayed, gave them hope, or demonstrated His love in a deeply personal way. Different people have different stories because Christ works within individual lives and relationships. The man delivered from demons was simply instructed to tell others what God had done for him. Christians likewise do not need perfect theological speeches before speaking about Jesus. Sanctifying Christ as Lord in the heart naturally prepares believers to answer one of the most important questions anyone could ask: Why do you believe in Jesus?

How Christians communicate their hope matters alongside what they communicate. Peter specifically instructs believers to respond with gentleness and respect, maintaining a clean conscience and allowing godly behavior to answer those who falsely accuse them. Sharing Jesus should never become an opportunity to humiliate someone, win an argument, or demonstrate superiority. Dr. Dave also stresses Peter’s straightforward teaching that suffering can sometimes occur within God’s will. Jesus suffered according to God’s plan, the disciples endured trials, and believers may encounter struggles through which God teaches, disciplines, strengthens, and matures them. There is an important distinction, however, between suffering because we behaved wrongly and suffering because we faithfully did what was right. You do not need the perfect answer about Jesus; you simply need to be ready to tell what Jesus has done for you—with gentleness, respect, and hope.
