Correctly understanding Peter's instruction begins by recognizing that submission is a voluntary decision before God, not something a husband is commanded to force upon his wife. Dr. Dave emphasizes that Scripture addresses wives directly, while husbands carry their own responsibility to love sacrificially as Christ loved the church. Ultimately, God remains the authority over both. Healthy marriages therefore require husbands and wives to work together through yielding, giving, forgiving, and serving, remembering that those closest to us should often receive the greatest measure of grace.

Beyond arguments and verbal persuasion, Christian character possesses tremendous power to influence the people closest to us. Peter teaches that a husband who is not following God's Word can be deeply affected by his wife's pure and reverent conduct. Dr. Dave points to Peter's description of the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, emphasizing that God looks beyond clothing, jewelry, physical appearance, and age to what a person truly is inside. Husbands and wives are called to become visible reflections of Jesus to each other and to everyone around them. Although believers will sometimes fail, they continue growing through humility, forgiveness, and perseverance, seeking to become faithful billboards that display Christ through their lives.
